POSITION SUMMARY/RESPONSIBILITIES

As a professional working within the perioperative services department, the Sterile Processing Department (SPD) Educator possesses in-depth knowledge and technical expertise in SPD best practices and processes with which the SPD Educator utilizes to serve as a subject matter expert, a consultant for University Health stakeholders, and in supporting and mentoring SPD staff.  The SPD Educator is responsible and accountable for identifying knowledge or practice deficiencies of staff, developing educational interventions, coordinating intervention implementations, and evaluating outcomes on the identified gap(s) in accordance with organizational policies and procedures, and best practices of professional organization standards to drive high quality outcomes. 

The responsibilities of the SPD Educator include (but not limited to) onboarding new hire staff and coordinating their probationary orientation period, provide regular education in-services across all shifts.  Additionally, the SPD Educator supports optimizing the quality and efficiency of department outputs through regular environmental surveillance rounding and providing prompt constructive yet supportive feedback to SPD staff while treating all employees with respect.  The SPD Educator is a trusted resource to all employees and UH stakeholders with a primary focus in quality assurance within the decontamination, prep and pack, and sterilization phases in SPD.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

A Bachelor’s degree in Business, Education or Healthcare related field is preferred or a combination of similar education and experience.  Minimum of five (5) years’ experience in sterile processing is required.

Specialty certification in Surgical Technology (CST or ST-C), Central Services Technician (CRCST) or Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CBSPT) is strongly preferred at hire. CSPDT certification is required within (1) year from the start date.

Must have working knowledge of computer software programs, desktop publishing and audio-visual equipment and materials.  Outstanding written and oral communication skills to write business communications, make group presentations, and effectively impart information at staff meetings.  Must have effective organizational, communication and human relations skills, as the incumbent will be coordinating several projects simultaneously and working closely with department management and all levels of staff. Must be self-directed and self-motivated with strong customer service skills. Demonstrates commitment to providing excellent customer service.  Must have current knowledge of CMS, TJC, ANSI/AAMI/ASHRAE, AORN, OSHA, and regulatory agencies as they pertain to Sterile Processing practices.
