Nurse Manager
University HospitalPatient Care Coordinator, Organ Placement
University Health Transplant Institute | San Antonio, Texas
Be Part of the Moment That Changes Everything.
For a transplant patient, the call that an organ has been offered is the moment they have been waiting for — sometimes for years. At the University Health Transplant Institute (UHTI), that moment is met by a team of highly skilled organ placement nurses working around the clock to make safe, timely, life-saving transplants possible. We are seeking an experienced Nurse Manager to lead that team.
About UHTI
The University Health Transplant Institute is one of the nation's most respected and high-volume multiorgan transplant programs, performing more than 400 transplants annually across liver, kidney, lung, and pediatric programs. Recognized as the second-largest living liver donation program in the United States and the only pediatric living liver transplant center in Southwest Texas, UHTI operates within a Magnet-designated health system and is guided by a deep commitment to clinical excellence, innovation, and patient-centered care.
This is not just a transplant program. It is a nationally recognized center where extraordinary things happen every day.
About the Role
This role serves as the nurse manager for Organ Placement, leading a dedicated 24/7 nursing team at the epicenter of the transplant process — the critical window between organ offer and transplant. Working in close collaboration with transplant surgeons and the broader multidisciplinary care team, you and your team will:
- Initiate organ offers, collaborating directly with transplant surgeons to ensure appropriate patient matching
- Champion patient readiness by conducting comprehensive assessments of medical, psychosocial, and financial suitability at the time of organ offer — ensuring every candidate is positioned for the best possible outcome
- Drive timely, safe transplants by coordinating all aspects of the transplant event, from informed consent and surgical team notification to OR, ICU, Blood Bank, and HLA coordination
- Serve as a trusted resource for waitlisted patients and families during one of the most significant and emotionally charged moments of their lives
- Lead a team of organ placement nurses, fostering a culture of clinical excellence, regulatory integrity, and continuous improvement
- Ensure full compliance with UNOS/OPTN, CMS Conditions of Participation, and Joint Commission standards governing organ allocation and transplantation
This role operates at the intersection of advanced clinical judgment, surgical collaboration, and compassionate patient care — in an environment where urgency, precision, and expertise matter in equal measure.
What We're Looking For
- Current RN licensure in the State of Texas required
- Bachelor's degree in nursing required; Master's degree preferred
- Minimum 5 years of nursing experience, with at least 2 years in a lead or supervisory capacity
- Transplant or organ placement nursing experience preferred
- CCTC certification or equivalent national certification preferred
- Strong clinical judgment, exceptional communication skills, and the ability to lead with composure in high-stakes, time-sensitive situations
- BLS Healthcare Provider certification required
Why UHTI?
- Join a nationally recognized, high-volume program that is redefining what transplant care looks like in the Southwest
- Work at the forefront of transplant medicine alongside some of the most accomplished surgical and medical teams in the country
- Lead meaningful work — your team's expertise and leadership directly determines whether a patient receives their lifesaving transplant safely and on time
- Thrive in a Magnet-designated organization that values nursing leadership, professional development, and shared governance
- Be part of a culture that believes great transplant outcomes start with great teams
